Three GPS teachers receive Excellence in Teaching Award

Each year, the Superintendent has the pleasure of acknowledging some of our highly dedicated and motivated teachers with the Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award, commonly known as the "Grinspoon Award" in honor of its founder, Harold Grinspoon.

To be eligible, teachers had to demonstrate remarkable classroom performance, excellent attendance, benefit to the school community above and beyond the classroom, evaluations of proficient or exemplary, and the endorsement of their principal. All three of our award winners did just that, and were surprised in their classroom on February 27th with the awards!

These three teachers will be honored at a banquet for Excellence in Teaching Award Winners at the Log Cabin in Holyoke on Thursday, April 30th. The program features the presentation of individual awards, with winners receiving an engraved plaque, and a check for $500, with “New Teacher” winners receiving $250.

This year's award winners:

Award for a new teacher

Marilyn Squier, Grade 7 Special Education Teacher, Greenfield Middle School

Ms. Squier has taught Math and Special Education at GMS since 2017. Her classroom is always full of life & learning!

Awards for veteran teachers

Julie Letendre, Preschool Teacher, Academy of Early Learning

Ms. Julie Letendre was recognized in front of her class and colleagues. Ms. Julie started as a prechool teacher at Newton School in 2005 and moved to N. Parish in 2006. She touches young minds and hearts!

Dharam Khalsa, Reading Teacher, Greenfield High School

For our final award, we visited the beautiful Greenfield High School and surprised Ms. Dharam Khalsa, who will be retiring this year after a decade of teaching in the Greenfield Public Schools. Ms. Khalsa has taught Reading and served as a lead mentor.
