GPS Convocation features Songs, Celebrations, and Successes

Convocation 2015

The all-new Greenfield High School was the setting for Greenfield Public Schools' convocation for the 2015-2016 school year. Joined by State Representative Paul Mark, Greenfield Community College President Bob Pura, Mayor Bill Martin, and School Committee Chairwoman Maryelen Calderwood, teachers and administrators kicked off the new academic year in the new GHS auditorium, amidst food and festivities.  Introduced at this year's convocation were the incoming cadre of new teachers, their mentor teachers, returning educators and staff, and new administrators.

Teachers were implored by Mr. Pura to "put students first," and to "eat more ice cream," while Rep. Mark shared anecdotes of the impression that a teacher can make when taking the time to get to know an individual student. Chair Calderwood highlighted her own humorous experience with her childhood introduction to standardized testing, and Mayor Martin shared his support for the success of our students and the new, energy-efficient Greenfield High School, which enjoys an 80% reimbursement by the Mass. School Building Authority (MSBA).

As part of a year-long focus on collaboration, teachers were invited to vote for the GPS song of the year. Selections include Beyonce's "I Was Here," Kelly Clarkson's "Invincible" and Shawn Mendes' "Something Big." Voting is open until  9/8 and teachers and student can vote on Twitter by tweeting @Super_gps using the hashtags #iwasheregps, #invinciblegps, and #somethingbiggpgs. Teachers and students can also vote on our online poll- only 1 vote per person, please! Winner of the song of the year will be announced after all votes are tallied.

The Convocation also featured the Superintendent's keynote address, celebrating the many achievements of the district, a look forward at the district's year-long focus on building Professional Learning Communities through collaborative protocols, and an introduction to the district's Vision, Mission and Core Values, all part of the Greenfield Public Schools Strategic Plan.  Teachers also received training in Student Safety information including Food Allergens, Student Privacy Regulations, and Special Education guidelines for Supporting All Students.

An enjoyable and productive start to the school year, in a spacious and energy-efficient building, set the tone for the a great 2015-2016 year! Go Green Wave!
