We would encourage you to file an application for free or reduced meals.

We cannot approve an application that is not complete, and the parent is responsible for any charges incurred prior to the application being approved. Return the application to your child’s school as soon as possible. Approval of an application will become effective on the date that the application is received in the school cafeteria.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

  1. Who can get free or reduced meals?

Children in households getting Food Stamps or TAFN and foster children. Also if your household income is within the limits on the Federal Income Chart, your child may receive free or reduced meals

  1. Will the information be checked?

Yes, we may ask for proof of the information that you provided.

  1. If I do not qualify now, may I apply later?

You may apply at any time during the school year, if your household size goes up, your income goes down, or you start receiving Food Stamps, or TAFN. If you lose your job, your children may be able to get free or reduced meals during the time that you are unemployed after you file the application with the school cafeteria.

  1. What if my household size or income changes?

If your children qualify for free or reduced prices based on your income, you must tell us if your household size goes up or down, or if your income goes up by more than $ 50. per month. Call us at 772-1334. You may have to fill out another application at this time.

  1. What if I disagree with the school’s decision about my application?

You should talk to school officials. You also may ask for a hearing by calling or writing to: Food and Nutritional Services, Greenfield Public Schools, 141 Davis Street, Greenfield, MA 01301, Telephone: 413-772-1334.

If you have any other questions or need help, call 772-1334.

Sincerely,
Bernie Novak

No Charge Policy
2009-10

August 19, 2009

Dear Parents / Guardians,

This Year, students will no longer be allowed to charge meals in the cafeteria.  At this time we are respectfully requesting that you pay off any balances that your children may owe.  This practice is in place to help families manage their accounts. Timely payment on the part of parents will allow the food service department maintain financial  viability for the school year.

The courtesy of allowing students to charge an occasional meal because they forgot their lunch money was never meant to be used like a “credit card.”  Unfortunately, many people have abused this privilege, to the point that we no longer allow it.

Please remember that snack milks and a la carte purchases are not part of the school meals program.  Even if you qualify for free or reduced meals, you are still responsible for paying for these items.

You may continue to pre-pay for your children’s meals.  Each time your child purchases a meal from the cafeteria, the amount will be deducted from his/her account. This may be by check, or online.  Payments online may be accessed by  clicking on the www.gpsk12.org then clicking the Nutrikids.com  icon. This will allow you to make payments by credit card or by PayPal .

If your family is experiencing financial difficulties, or has experienced a reduction in income, please submit a Free / Reduced Price Meals Application at any time during the school year.

Sincerely
Bernie Novak
Director of Food & Nutritional Services, S.N.S.
