We would encourage you to file an application for free or reduced meals. We cannot approve an application that is not complete, and the parent is responsible for any charges incurred prior to the application being received. Return the application to your child’s school.
Here are answers to frequently asked questions:
1. Who can get free or reduced meals?
Children in households getting Food Stamps or TAFN and foster children. Also if your household income is within the limits on the Federal Income Chart, your child can get free or reduced meals.
2. Will the information be checked?
Yes, we may ask for proof of income of the information that you provided.
3. If I don’t qualify now, may I apply later?
You may apply at any time during the school year if your household size goes up, your income goes down, or you start receiving Food Stamps, or TANF. If you lose your job, your children may be able to get free or reduced meals during the time that you are unemployed.
4. What if my household size or income changes?
If your children qualify for free or reduced price meals based on your income you must tell us if your household size goes up or down or if your income goes up by more than $ 50 per month . call us at 772-1334. you do not have to fill out another application.
5. What if I disagree with the school’s decision about my application?
You should talk to school officials. You also may ask for a hearing by calling or writing to Bernie Novak, Greenfield Public Schools,141 Davis Street, Greenfield, MA 01301, Tel 413-772-1334.
If you have any other questions or need help, call 772-1334.
Sincerely,
Bernie Novak

Dear Parents / Guardians,
Beginning with the start of school this year, students will no longer be allowed to charge meals in the cafeteria. At this time we are respectfully requesting that you pay off any balances that your children may owe. This practice is being put in place to help families manage their accounts and avoid large balances, and to also help the food services department maintain financial viability. The courtesy of allowing students to charge an occasional meal because they forgot their lunch money was never meant to be used like a “credit card.” Unfortunately, many people have abused this privilege, to the point that we can no longer allow it.
Please remember that snack milks and a la carte purchases are not part of the school meals program. Even if you qualify for free or reduced meals, you are still responsible for paying for these items.
You may continue to pre-pay for your children’s meals. Each time your child purchases a meal from the cafeteria, the amount will be deducted from his/her account.
If your family is experiencing financial difficulties, or has experienced a reduction in income, please submit a Free/Reduced Price Meals Application at any time during the school year.
Sincerely
Bernie Novak
Director of Food & Nutritional Services, S.N.S.
